Prefixes & Suffixes

Prefixes & Suffixes

Words are made up of parts, like roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Find an example of a word with a common root in your everyday life, like "telephone". Ask your child to think of other words that have the same word parts.
Use visuals when you introduce your students to new word parts, like roots, prefixes, or suffixes. Have students draw pictures that will help them remember the meaning of a root word or create a hand gesture that will remind students of the word part they have learned.

Division with Estimated Quotients

Division with Estimated Quotients

Talk about how you use division in real life. For example, "when we order pizza tonight, we will divide the pieces to determine how many we can each have." When your child sees examples of math in the real world, they will be able to contextualize the word problems they are solving on paper.
Encourage your students to make their thinking visible as they solve word problems. Model how to underline or highlight important information in the problem. Show students various methods for solving problems, like tape diagrams and models. Offer base ten blocks as a tool for students who struggle with drawing their own models.

Literary Analysis

Literary Analysis

Keep a list of comprehension questions posted at home. When you ask your child about their reading, try asking different questions from the list. Instead of asking, "what was your book about?" you might ask, "would you be friends with the main character?" Encourage your child to explain their answer by asking for examples.
Only a small part of comprehension involves recall questions. Encourage deeper thinking by asking your students to come up with their own questions, like "why did the author choose this setting for the story?" Or, have your students write similes and metaphors that help them understand the text.
