Introduction

Backwards Number LineLet's Practice Subtraction!
  • Tell your students that today they will be practicing taking away, which is also called subtraction.
  • You can show an example by stacking 5 blocks and taking 2 away and counting the remaining 3 blocks aloud.
  • Tell students that they can also count backwards to subtract.

Beginning

  • Model how to subtract by counting aloud and having students follow along with their fingers.

Intermediate

  • Invite students to chorally count with you as you model how to subtract.
  • Model how to count backwards using a visual such as a number line.
